Jane Austen
‘A truth universally acknowledged’
Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 October
11am-4pm

It is the year 1817. The Prince Regent rules in England due to his father’s illness. Napoleon has been defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. A careful mother has her work cut out to ensure her girls are exposed to the right sort of company in Brighton.

What was it like to be young, female and single in the town? Was it all soldiers, dancing and assemblies, or was Brighton truly disreputable? Come and meet the characters tempted by fashionable Brighton and discover what the future holds in store for them.

Costumed Regency characters outside the Royal Pavilion

The characters visitors will meet are:

Mrs Walters A curious visitor to the Royal Pavilion, she is staying in Brighton with her two eligible daughters – Miss Jane and Miss Martha Walters. Their mother is happy to share her many views on the proper raising of girls, the healthful benefits of being beside the sea and a woman’s proper role.

Miss Jane Walters Rather too bookish for her mothers liking. ‘The bride and the bluestocking are at odds’ as her mother is fond of saying. For the sake of propriety, it is Jane who should wed before her younger sister. Is it possible that this could ever happen?

Miss Martha Walters Eager to live life to its fullest, impetuous and flighty, she is as different from her sister as the waves are to the sand. Will her reputation be lost as the tide rises higher?

Is it easy to distinguish the ‘rogues’ from the ‘right sort’ in a town like Brighton?

Mrs Walters and her daughters will encounter:

Thomas Read Kemp A former member of parliament and owner of the original manor house on this site. Mr Kemp has some interesting views on town planning. What will Mrs Walters make of his unusual religious convictions?

And…a dashing young captain of the guards, but on half pay – due to the ending of hostilities. What is his interest in the young Misses Walters? Do they find the uniform appealing – or does the captain possess fine qualities of character too?
