‘The Pavilion was made into an Indian Hospital. As a child we were taken to go all through it, then we had to write a composition after. We went in the Pavilion and saw the Indians in bed; we were told that they’d got electric beds to keep them warm. Well, we thought that was wonderful in those days...but I suppose it was like an electric blanket or something for the cold"

Mrs Phillips visited the Royal Pavilion in1915

"We were coming down London Road and I
saw the Royal Pavilion lit up and I just said
to my husband “What’s that building? It’s
fantastic – I want to work there!”
…and this was my first job.’

Minna Robertson. Pavilion Guide 2001

"One day as I was standing behind my father in the Music Room, he started to flake off some of the dark varnish that was on the wall. Underneath there was lovely colouring which had been covered for many years by dark red paint... I watched with great fascination on the emergence of a dragon, the writhing body of a snake, scales on their backs, golden shadows on a tree and the gilded colours of leaves…."

Margery C Roberts whose father was Director of the Royal Pavilion 1920-1935
