FILMING & PHOTOGRAPHY

Site map

Filming and photography at the Royal Pavilion

The Royal Pavilion is a popular location for professional filming and photography.

As well as appearing in its own right in a variety of television documentaries, it has starred in feature films such as Ian McKellen’s ‘Richard III’ and ‘The End of the Affair’ (with Ralph Fiennes and Julianne Moore).

The Royal Pavilion will feature in the popular TV series 'Midsomer Murders' in 2010.

Interiors provide exotic backgrounds for fashion shoots, and unusual settings for programmes ranging from children’s TV to educational broadcasting.

See below for news and current events items.

Conditions

To ensure your film or photography shoot works as effectively as possible, you must book in advance.

We manage filming and photography actively to enable a production company or photographer to achieve the images they need, while working within the constraints of the building. In particular, security is paramount, as well as the needs of our visitors. You can download a copy of our full statement of conditions for filming and photography here.

Locations

The most popular locations are the Music Room, the Banqueting Room and the Great Kitchen, but filming is possible in most other parts of the palace (including some rooms which are not normally open to the public).

We always recommend you make a preliminary visit to identify likely locations and to discuss the practicalities. To arrange a visit, contact royalpavilion@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Fees

Our standard facility fees - shown below - are charged by the hour (or part of an hour). Standard fees apply to a single photographer and to crews of up to eight people, with one camera. For larger crews, additional charges will apply.

Interiors
Exteriors
Daytime (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm)
£250
£150
Evenings and weekends
£350
£200

We will calculate special fees for the more complicated projects, for example those that require more than one camera crew, shooting at night, or changes to the usual displays.

All fees are subject to VAT.

Exteriors

The Royal Pavilion itself and the rest of the estate, with its Regency gardens and the restored museum and Dome buildings, offer many attractive settings for exteriors. You should seek permission to film or photograph exteriors beforehand by contacting royalpavilion@brighton-hove.gov.uk

If your shoot needs to be supervised by the Royal Pavilion, or requires any special access, we will charge a facility fee.

Please note that, because of a continuing programme of repairs to the exterior stonework, parts of the building are at present covered in scaffolding, which can limit some views.

News and current events

Royal Pavilion gardens provide an appropriate backdrop for certain news stories. We are able to host news crews in the gardens and are usually able to waive fees for an item requiring not more than 15 minutes access, with a crew of one or two people. Nevertheless, we need to know beforehand so that we can give security clearance - so please call us on 03000 290906, even it if is very short notice.
